Alex grows a little more each day...we'll find out just how much next week at his 2 month check up! :) That will also be the first time (since he was born) that he gets vaccination shots. Mommy is not looking forward to that part at all, but, thankfully, Daddy will be there to hold her hand! I'm sure Alex will do great, as he has done so with everything up to this point in his life! He has been such a trooper and we are so proud of him.
At two weeks old, we found out that Alex has GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). It has been hard on him (and on Mommy and Daddy too!) and we are still working to find just the right dose of medicine that will help him and give him complete relief until he grows out of it, but hopefully we will have something worked out when we go to the doctor next week. We have also been working with the doctor to clear up a rash on his face and chest that the doctor thinks might be a milk allergy. So far the doctor has changed his formula twice, but this second formula seems to be working!
Alex isn't sleeping through the night yet, but most nights he is only getting up twice between 9pm and 6am. That's progress! There have even been a few nights that he has only gotten up once (and, of course, those nights have been Daddy's nights to get up with him! LOL).
Smiles came early for our little man, but January 22 was the first time that he truly smiled and laughed intentionally (or so it appeared). Alex and Mommy were sitting in the living room just cuddling before we all left to have his one month pictures taken, and he responded to Mommy's silly voices and faces by laughing at her. Since then he has smiled often--at Mommy, Daddy, and his grandparents--but his laughs are still reserved only for his play gym. ;) January 22 was also Alex's first day at church. He was a great hit in his Sunday school class and his teachers said he was a great baby--which we already knew, right?!
Other milestones? Alex started following objects and faces with his eyes at about 5 weeks. Each week his line of vision and his ability to follow things farther away gets better and better!! Tummy time is progressing well. While he doesn't like it, he will tolerate it for several minutes and loves pushing himself up (like he is doing mini pushups) whenever he has tummy time on his boppy pillow.
Alex already shows a preference for his right side and feels much more comfortable batting at toys and kicking on that side. Looks like he will be right handed just like Mommy and Daddy! With each passing week, Alex is sleeping less and less during the day and is more focused and active. He loves playing on his play gym and kicking his legs as fast as he can. When we hold him up in front of us, very often, he tries to bare weight on his legs...and, boy, are those legs strong! Pretty sure we have an athlete on our hands!
Another one of his favorite activities is having conversations with Mommy or Daddy. While his contribution to the conversations are little more than grunts, coos, and sighs, he loves "talking" to us as we walk with him and tell him about our day or about what he sees around the house.
About once a week or so, one set of grandparents or the other (and even Aunt Katy and Uncle Brandon once!) comes over to watch him while Mommy and Daddy go out to dinner. I think they might love it more than Mommy and Daddy, but we are so very thankful for such a great support system and love our date nights!
In two and a half weeks, I will be going back to work. While we are grateful to have found a great daycare, I am still emotional about the transition. It's VERY easy to get used to seeing Alex's shining face all day long. Even on days when he hasn't felt well and is quite fussy, there is nowhere else on earth that I would rather be!
